Sunday Shorts: The Eye of the Beholder

By Sarah Cate Anstey, Sep 25 2016 08:04AM

Narcissa creeps up slowly

so as to surprise it

(as if it would make a difference)

and murmurs

“Mirror, Mirror on the wall

who is the fairest of them all?”

It shatters as if in reply

(Not You)

She starts at the feet

(too large to bind)

She takes a knife to her toes

(and part of her heal)

When you are Queen you

will have no need to go on foot

Now her feet fit dainty shoes

(stained with blood)

Next her hair

(which everyone knows)

Should be as black as ebony

And her skin as white as snow

And her lips as red as blood.

“Mirror, Mirror on the wall

who is the fairest of them all?”

(Not You)

There is only one thing left to do

So she starves her beauty out

“Mirror, Mirror on the wall

who is the fairest of them all?”

You (this time)

She faints, the king

(taking it for swooning)

catches, then marries her
